Beyond the Cast: Kayak Fly Fishing for Largemouth Bass with Topwater Frogs and Streamers

Gearing Up for a Largemouth Bass Fly Fishing Trip

There’s something about packing up your gear before a trip that sets the tone. The anticipation builds with every rod, reel, and fly box you load up.

For this trip with my brother, I brought two setups I trust completely:

Sage 5 wt fly rod – perfect for lighter presentations

Orvis Mirage 8 wt fly rod setup – built for throwing bigger flies and handling aggressive bass

To cover every situation, I packed a range of fly lines:

Orvis Clearwater Floating Line – ideal for topwater frog flies

Cortland 444 Sink Line – for getting streamers down in deeper water

Cortland 444 Peach Line – a classic, smooth casting line

My fly selection was built around confidence:

• Olive streamers

• Frog patterns

• My custom double barrel popper

• The always-reliable olive Circus Peanut

This trip was focused on largemouth bass fly fishing, and I had a feeling conditions were lining up just right.

“There’s nothing like the anticipation of a fishing trip—when every piece of gear feels like it holds potential.”

Day One: Topwater Frog Fly Action Was On Fire

Cloudy skies greeted us on day one—perfect topwater fly fishing conditions.

I wasted no time tying on one of my go-to flies: a double barrel frog popper.

From the first few casts, it was game on.

Bass were exploding on the surface. Aggressive eats, missed strikes, and heart-pounding blowups made it one of those days you wish would never end.

Fishing from kayaks gave us a huge advantage. We could quietly position ourselves along grass edges and shallow structure without spooking fish.

Topwater Fly Fishing Tactics for Largemouth Bass

Fishing topwater flies for bass is all about presentation and patience:

Target structure – grass lines, pockets, and edges

Let the fly sit – longer pauses triggered bigger strikes

Use subtle pops – not too aggressive, just enough to create movement

Stay alert – many strikes came right after the pause

The key was slowing everything down and letting the fish commit.

“The explosion of a largemouth bass on a topwater frog fly is something you never forget.”

Kayak Fly Fishing Advantage

Fishing from kayaks completely changed the game for us.

We were able to:

• Access shallow water and tight cover

• Move quietly through feeding zones

• Position ourselves perfectly for accurate casts

For kayak fly fishing, stealth is everything—and on this trip, it paid off.

Final Day: Switching to Streamers in the Wind

As forecasted, the last day brought stronger winds, making topwater fishing less effective.

Time to adjust.

I switched over to olive streamers, including one of my favorites—the olive Circus Peanut.

This changed the approach completely.

Instead of surface strikes, we focused on:

• Deeper water columns

• Drop-offs and submerged structure

• Maintaining a tight line for solid strip sets

The hits were different—less explosive, but that deep, heavy thump told you everything you needed to know.

“When the topwater bite fades, a well-presented streamer can turn the entire day around.”

Why Olive Streamers Work for Bass

Olive is one of the most effective colors when fly fishing for largemouth bass.

It imitates:

• Baitfish

• Small bluegill

• Frogs in low light

The Circus Peanut fly adds extra movement and profile, making it deadly in stained or windy conditions.

Time on the Water That Matters

This trip wasn’t just about the fishing.

Spending time on the water with my brother—laughing between casts, figuring things out together, and just being present—that’s what makes trips like this unforgettable.

No distractions. Just water, wind, and time slowing down.

“Some of the best moments in fishing happen between the casts.”

Final Thoughts: Beyond the Cast

From explosive topwater eats to dialing in streamer presentations, this trip had everything I love about bass fly fishing.

But more than that, it was about connection—to the water, to the process, and to the people you share it with.

Because in the end…

It’s never just about the cast.

It’s about everything that happens beyond it.

Yes indeed! I have fished a few times over there down by Fourchon and Larose. It’s amazing action there.
